Thomas Martin Conroy
Dr. Thomas Conroy currently lives in Pittsburgh, PA where he has been working with Pittsburgh Musical Theater: Max in THE SOUND OF MUSIC, March 2020 at the Byham; and music director for their youth production of BYE, BYE, BIRDIE. He is the assistant organist and choir director at St. Mary of the Mount and Prince of Peace Parish Grouping where he works with a wonderful adult choir and bell choir, plays weekend masses, and sings and plays for funerals and weddings.
From 2015 and the end of 2019, Tom worked in regional theaters all around the country and on tour. That return to theater full-time/freelance came after about fifteen years in academia as a student and professor.
Tom acts, does music directing, stage directing, voice and speech coaching, composing, writing, arranging, and is a very good country-western dancer.

In 2014, Tom taught Introduction to Philosophy, Philosophy of Religion, and Ethics for Ivy Tech Community College and English to Speakers of Other Languages at Ball State University. He also served as an accompanist for music theatre classes and shows at Ball State.
From 2009 to 2013, he taught harmony and musicianship at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music during the academic school year, and he was pursuing the great books masters program at St. John's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico during the summers. In addition to reading philosophy at St. John's, he also assisted the professors during the summer of 2013 with the inaugural offering of a Homeric Greek Summer Intensive course focusing on Greek grammar and translating portions of The Iliad and The Odyssey.
He earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in composition at the Shepherd School of Music, Rice University (2006) and the Master of Music degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (2003). He has also served on the faculties of Texas A and M University and The Moores School of Music at the University of Houston where he taught courses in harmony, analysis, counterpoint, music history, and musical theater history. He worked with the San Francisco Opera as a composer and teaching artist in the ARIA NETWORK opera education program for four years.
Always continuing his studies in counterpoint, keyboard harmony, and composition, he has taken part in the The European American Musical Alliance summer course at the École Normale de Musique in Paris (02, 04, 05, 08).
Recent composition performances include his homage to choral music teachers and conductors: “THIS IS WHY I SING”, which was premiered by the Houston Chamber Choir and has been featured on NPR; and SEARCHING FOR SPINOZA, a two-act musical drama, premiered by the opera department at UNC Chapel Hill. The newest works in his catalog include “THE BRODIE SET” – a song cycle based on Muriel Spark’s novella, THE PRIME OF MISS JEAN BRODIE and THE NECKLACE, a one-act chamber opera based on Guy de Maupassant's short story. Prior to his academic career in music and philosophy, Thomas toured as an actor with four national tours of Broadway shows including Cabaret, Kiss of the Spiderwoman, Crazy for You, and Grease.
